Bedtime story

We look at three different ways to turn your bedroom into a calm and luxurious sanctuary.

   1. SOMETHING FRENCH
“I based the entire room on a beautiful embroidered linen fabric called Exotic Pineapple by GP&J Baker from St Leger & Viney,” says decorator Amanda Walters. “It set the tone for the serene cream and blue palette and for the romantic French-inspired mood.” The pale walls, neutral linen curtains and a linen-covered armchair are offset by soft blue accents, and Amanda added touches of glamour by painting the bench and headboard frame silver. “The Aubusson carpet was the final touch and it worked beautifully with the crewel work scatters,” she says. “Overall it was about creating a calm, cool space that’s easy to live in, yet will look good for years to come.”

   2. CLEAN CUT
“The look I was after was an elegantly neutral space that would appeal to both male and female guests,” says Sumari Krige of La Grange Interiors. Collaborating with interior designer Adele van der Merwe on the Athol Place Boutique Hotel, Sumari combined interesting shapes and textures to create this serene, spacious retreat. A contemporary headboard in charcoal linen sets the tone, offset by an oversized mirror on the right and intentionally mismatched bedside tables. “The silver flight chests add an element of the unexpected and the artwork is modern, yet unobtrusive,” adds Sumari. The crisp white bedlinen, white desk and slip-covered chair provide a fresh, neutral base that can be updated with scatters or throws as the seasons change.

  3. CASUAL ELEGANCE
“Our brief for this light-filled bedroom was to breathe new life into the space, yet retain its sense of character,” says Heather Welham of Portfolio Interiors. Working with her client’s existing metal bed and country-style armoire, which houses the television, Heather began with a palette of stone, chocolate brown and aqua. “The key lay in layering several beautiful and contrasting textures.” Take the quilted linen night frill, luxurious faux fur throw and oversized velvet scatters, anchored by the multi-toned damask fabric. “We slip-covered an existing armchair in linen and sourced a Himalayan silk rug with a contemporary circular pattern. For a final touch of luxury I added what I call a ‘bed wrap’ – it’s essentially a horizontal runner of gorgeous, more expensive fabric that looks fantastic and can be changed with the seasons
