How to Get a Good Shade on the Terrace (Patio)

Here we will try to take a brief look through all decorative options we have to get a nice and cool shade without compromising neither the space nor the design of the terrace or spend a fortune:

- The orientation: The first thing to know when to get shadow is the orientation of the terrace. Because it serves to put an awning or umbrella if you then going to shade the neighbor and not us.
A terrace facing east will get a very steep and warm sun in the morning, a south facing terrace will receive intense sun vertical at noon and a strong western oriented and inclined in the afternoon.
We prefer the terrace facing east, as the morning sun is very nice and in noon; home offers plenty of shade and shelter, so no need to buy anything, only you need a small umbrella in case if in some morning the sun tilt.

North facing terraces are no more than sun in the morning and late afternoon, and are only recommended in very hot places where you want to be always in the shade.
It is important to take into account the guidance when buying the necessary accessories for shade.

- Parasols: It is an ideal base to provide shade; they are inexpensive, there are all types and designs to suit any need. Of course, unless you buy a very large and showy, the amount of shade they provide is limited.
In our opinion they are perfect for those who do not seek shade all day but only for specific times and areas, like for breakfast, lunch, nap and etc.
The ideal is to buy one with an arm adjustable height and tilt, so you can protect from sun in the morning or evening, which comes in side-down and leaning far the umbrella.

- Awnings: It provide shade according to their size, the problem is that it's often tend to be expensive and we need a professional to install it. They also hold enough space and is not easy to fit them into the decor.
You can distinguish between fixed awnings that can be opened and closed but not removed, and temporary awnings that can be mounted only in summer or for any particular occasion.

They are highly recommended for south facing terraces, as well protecting from vertical sun of midday hours. But they are less useful for morning and afternoon sun.
There are many models that can be tipped, but then the space under them is very small.

The ideals are those that are on rails and can extend the awning in vertical, but these structures are expensive and visually unattractive.

- Vines: This is a solution rather than shade that sun gives, although our pergola grows as a vine or bougainvillea, there's always another ray of sun that slip but that does not have to be bad.

The benefits include refresh and perfume the air with its pleasant aroma, in addition that in winter, many plants have fewer leaves and pass more sun than in summer.
If in addition you grow plants on the sides, these will offer protection from the sun in the afternoon and filtered and cool the air too.

- Trees: I have left to last my favorite shadow, that is a tree. There's nothing like rest or eat in its shade. If you choose well you will enjoy a fruity aroma and taste of their fruit when they arrive.

The downside is that trees grow more slowly than the vines, so you may enjoy a good shade to play with your grandchildren.

So you have four options to get a good shade:
- Umbrella: for those who have chosen well the orientation of your deck and / or just need shade for a while a day in a small area.
- Awning: for thick and wide shade lovers, especially for south facing terraces.
- Vines: ideal for getting a natural environment and without giving up a shade. Require patience and care but is much appreciated.
- Trees: the paradise of shadows but it need place, patience and planning. Only fit for large terraces and gardens.
