Black Walls for Small Spaces

There is a myth, which says that dark colors do not fit into small spaces. White walls, in contrast, tend to give the illusion of increased space, but the darker shades can create their own magic in those places.
There is no doubt that white walls are effective in increasing the volume of a room, especially high ceilings, wood floors and furniture line and spaces with natural light. However, in rooms with low ceilings, paint the walls white is not a good option.

The alternative is, when it comes to small rooms, the black color, as it incorporates very well. The spaces that lack architectural character, like a toilet, can have a rather dramatic style. A dark color provides an elegant backdrop that allows insertion of accessories.
But not all dark colors work the same. Your best bet will always be black, charcoal, navy, deep brown. While dark red, green or medium blue can make the room seem even smaller.

How to Paint a Room

If you want to paint a room like a pro to give it a new look follow these tips:
1- Remove all the furniture and the greatest one must be covered carefully with plastic to avoid staining of paint. You must also remove the wall hangings such as shelves and even the tops of the current switches and valves and for safety cut the power when performing this task. Finally remove all doors, windows and hinges if removable.

2- Then proceed to prepare the surface to be painted: Check the condition of the walls and ceiling, if the surface is firm and clean you can paint directly.
Otherwise, if it is cracked, you shall remove the material and sanding to smooth the edges. Finally remove the dust from the walls with a brush. If the wall is very porous it is necessary to apply a coat of sealer or binder mixed with a bit of paint to use to serve as a primer or base.

3- Then you will cover everything that you do not want to paint, you will define exactly what should be painting, and use the paper tape specifically for painters.
This tape has the peculiarity of having an adhesive that does not remove the paint and is not sticky. Be covered such as window frames, doors and cabinet if mounted, and so on.
In case you want to paint the walls with two colors you should expect the first color dry and then delineate the tape and paint the second color. The masking tape should ideally remove when wet with painting of the last hand.

4- Prepare the paint: if the paint has a film on top, it must be carefully removed by cutting the edge without letting any fall to the bottom piece.
Then mix the paint well using a circular motion until the paint is homogeneous and get a uniform color.

5- When you get the paint ready, begin to paint: First begin with the ceiling with all hands are needed, if the paint is quality one or two hands will suffice.
The angles and areas closer to the walls are painted with a brush first. To paint the ceiling it is best to use a roller with extendable handle for applying a standstill and not having to climb stairs. The roller is impregnated with paint and it rolls over the surface to spread a thin coat of paint.

6- Then proceed with the walls painted from top to bottom taking wide vertical stripes of two rollers connecting strips with steep passes before re-wet the roller to get a perfect finish.
It is recommend to use painter trays where you can load and drain the roller to better control the amount of paint you apply.

People tend to always bet neutral colors when painting the walls of their houses and rooms, but the truth is that the possibilities are endless and more when we take the step of painting the walls with different colors.

Color Wheel is a great tool that let you see what colors will work well in combination to incorporate into a room. When you want to use more than one color, keep in mind to stick with the same intensity.

If you know a few tricks to use color wheel, then color can work magic. Each color has inherent characteristic, e.g. red is stimulating, so it is good choice for dining room where you want lively conversation, blue is restful that why it is popular for bedrooms.


Color wheel includes:
- Primary colors: red, blue and yellow.
- Secondary colors: green, orange and violet.
- Tertiary colors which is the result of combine primary and secondary colors, e.g. turquoise which created by mix blue with green.

 
Complementary colors, such as blue and orange, which are opposite each other on the color wheel often work well together, but make sure to not overpower the room. Involving an additional set of opposite colors from color wheel is referred as a double-complementary color scheme, e.g. green and blue, red and orange.
Monochromatic scheme can be boring unless you use several shades of the same color but ensure not to use too many contrasting values of the color.

Using pattern to energizes your room, to feel dramatic or strength use the same pattern throughout the room and for more lively effect, mix and match your patterns.
Use pattern in a room make it fun, large patterns fill the space and make it cozy.
Small scale patterns make a room feel larger. A great rule to use large patterns on large furnishings, medium on medium and small on small things such as accent pieces.



Texture provides depth and dimension to a room. textures can achieve by layering fabrics, floor coverings and wall finishes.
Texture can be brought with materials that have texture surface such as smooth, hard, soft, matte or shiny, but keep in mind that coarse surfaces; like stone, wood, stucco are absorb light and sound, and glossy and smooth surfaces; like metal, glass, silk are reflect light.
