Guest Post: We Love Scandanavian Style

Today’s guest post is from Susi, a writer for Arcadian Lighting. Visit their website and cool blog for more information about interior design, lighting design, and beautiful light fixtures. Enjoy!

We love Scandinavian style because it is so close to Shabby Chic. Scandinavian style is based on antique painted furniture, pale whites and gray palettes, and easy, yet elegant design. Here are 8 rooms that show why we love Scandinavian style and think you will too.

Scandinavian style is all about a pale, monochromatic palette of cool whites, pale creams and light grays. This dining room has the added bonus of chic natural accessories.

Pale, white washed rooms filled with icy blues are typical of Scandinavian style. Interesting textiles with subtle coloring and bold patterns are another thing we love about Scandinavian style. Love the antlers too.

White washed whites fill this farmhouse kitchen with Scandinavian style. We love the long white painted work table as a kitchen island, with the unexpected light fixture, an antique chandelier, above.

We love the tarnished silver and crystal of these antique pendant lights hung in a group over a white farmhouse table. Very elegant and very Scandinavian.

A palette of subtle variations on white is sophisticated and shabby chic at the same time. Clean lines and minimal decoration keep the focus on the pale colors.

We love gray and white rooms. White painted floors make this room feel super airy. Love the pale grays in the area rug and black and white photos.

Handmade and handcrafted furniture and accessories are definitely things we love about Scandinavian style. Chunky knits on pillows and ottomans remind us of Norwegian fisherman's sweaters.

We love Scandinavian antiques. This living room has a lovely mix of antiques, upholstered and slip covered furniture, all in palest shades of color and whites. Can't overlook the sparkling light fixtures—crystal chandeliers complete this space beautifully.

Italian Lighting

AGHAS Wall Sconces : The New Look of Italian Lighting

The collaboration of several Italian lighting and lamp resources has come together to form AGHAS Luce a high profile and visually impressive collection that represents "the new look of light". Even though the look of this lighting collection is "new age" the standards of the Murano glass blowers and firing techniques is centuries old. Here are a few of the AGHAS Luce wall sconces that are just a sampling of the look you can expect from one of my favorite lighting companies. The other contributors to the collection are SWAMI, and lucepura that have their own distinctive flair that will excite anyone who loves great looking glass art and its interaction with light. See the AGHAS collections here.

Candice Olson Lighting Decorating Ideas 2011

Candice Olson Lighting Designs

Create a Focal Point

The eye is drawn directly to a gorgeous light fixture, like the brilliant, crystal ball chandelier in this room. The giant globe not only gives off light, but picks up on the sparkle, shimmer and shine of everything else in its vicinity.

Mix It Up

Use a variety of lighting types. In addition to a ceiling full of recessed lights, a conventional chandelier with a contemporary twist helps define the dining room. A table lamp and Moroccan-inspired lanterns also provide a soft ambient glow.

Balance Lighting and Furniture

The dining table is the most dominant piece of furniture in this room so the lighting above has to be just as grand. A pair of classic Riley chandeliers in antique silver creates just the right presence.

Bring in the Sun

Make the most of natural light. Retracting translucent stacking blinds open to reveal a full view of the beautiful garden and allow in tons of sunshine, but when closed, they still bathe the room in a soft, diffused light. Rice-paper and cherry-wood lantern-style fixtures complement the Japanese design of the room.

Think About a Room's Purpose

This space needed to triple as a home office, art studio and lounge area, so Candice includes moveable track and under-mounted cabinet lighting to provide plenty of task lighting. In the lounge area, a funky helix-shaped fixture in teal and purple crystals adds ambience.

Complement the Style

Enhance a room's design style. For this living room, Candice chooses classic gold sconces, a crystal chandelier and recessed lighting to reflect the traditional surroundings.

Make a Statement

Create instant wow factor with an eye-catching chandelier. A black crystal chandelier plays against the theatrical backdrop of the banquette in this dining room. Recessed lighting brightens the rest of the space without taking away from the chandelier's grandeur.

Lighting Your Kitchen

The main areas of work and the kitchen have to be especially bright, method of lighting:
- Track Lighting: To achieve illumination without shadows you can place the rail over the area to be illuminated with the light points downward.

- Hidden Lighting: The most common type of lighting is hidden lights placed under furniture or wall shelves. Direct the light exactly where needed, but he says that the light is low enough not to give in his eyes, something that could be dangerous when working with sharp knives or hot liquids.

- Ceiling Lamps: They can provide good general lighting, but if it is the only source of illumination, it cast shadows and leave a kitchen area poorly lit. It is better to use a ceiling light with other light fixtures such as light rail or a secret.

Points to Consider When Choose Outdoor Lighting Fixtures

Many points shall take in consideration when choose outdoor lighting fixtures, below are some of them:

1) Layout: Firstly draw a sketch of your area in order to determine number of light point you need and where exactly you should place. Choose the type of light which will enhance the aesthetic of your area, e.g. fixed post light will be nice to light a path, while to light a beds or displays you need to use some fixtures with movable heads.
Also consider to have the ability to adjust your landscape according to it's matures and changes, that spot light point may not be ideal when your plants grow taller or when you add some new element.

2) Security: Exterior light is one of the least costly but most effective things you can do to deter thieves.
Use flood light to give more illumination for driveway or perimeter area where security is concern.
Motion sensor light is popular way to scare burglars, also they save energy since they only come on when something passes in front of the sensor.

Cost: Your budget is major factor when choose your outdoor lights. Remember that you get what you pay for, so try to find higher quality models on sale or just buy one set at a time.
It's not wrong to purchase an inexpensive lighting set for a quick upgrade but do not expect from these sets to last too many seasons.
